Egypt is hard at work to win back tourists, taking major steps this year to develop and open cultural sites to make the country more attractive to visitors.

The Egyptian Tourism Authority said that services at the pyramids of Giza will be expanded, while new augmented reality screens will also help visitors get a feel for the interior design of the pyramids.

Also, a pedestrian zone is planned for the Giza plateau. Beyond that, the Baron Empain Palace in Heliopolis, which was built as a suburb of Cairo at the outset of the 20th Century, is to be reopened, while a reopening of the Mohamed Ali Palace in Cairo is in the works.

These measures come as meanwhile a national museum in Sohag and a visitor centre at the archaeological site of Abydos on the River Nile are to be opened in April.

The planned new Grand Egyptian Museum near Cairo is set to open late in 2018 with numerous ancient artefacts, according to tourism authorities. â€" dpa
